The Hazelbeker Finger Feeder is a special need baby feeding device that was designed to be easily used in one hand, ensuring feed consistency. When baby cannot be fed at the breast to provide the touch of human skin as in breastfeeding Hazelbaker Finger Feeder will assist to conquer this issue. Allows infant to pace the feeding process. Fingerfeeder promotes proper and sequential contraction of the tongue and masticatory muscles. Trusted by Lactation Professionals when babies have feeding difficulties. Reusable, easy to assemble and clean. The Hazelbaker FingerFeeder is durable and can be used indefinitely for the same baby. It can be sanitized and sterilized making it ideal for longer-term use when indicated. Requires the baby to pace the feed. Milk will not flow unless the baby exerts effort that mimics good sucking at breast.
Switching to a slower flow bottle teat can help address feeding issues, but using the Hazelbaker™ FingerFeeder can prevent these problems altogether. The Hazelbaker™ FingerFeeder promotes pacing during feeding, requiring the baby to work for the milk, which closely mimics the effort needed for effective breastfeeding. This feeder encourages the baby to exert the necessary sucking effort, and if additional assistance is needed, a gentle squeeze of the milk container can help. However, excessive squeezing will cause the top to pop off, protecting the baby’s airway from being overwhelmed by a too-fast flow rate.
INSTRUCTIONS FOR FINGER FEEDING Hazelbaker Finger Feeder Instructions & Assembly PDFFeeding Instructions for Optimal Comfort and Effectiveness Positioning: Place both yourself and the baby in a comfortable feeding position, similar to the one shown in the photo. Using a pillow to raise the baby to chest height can enhance comfort for both of you. Feeding Side: Babies often prefer orienting to the right, so holding the baby with the left hand and finger-feeding with the right may be beneficial. However, choose the side that feels most comfortable for you and your baby. Relaxation: Keep your shoulders and elbows relaxed to minimize muscle strain. Use additional pillows for support if needed. Stimulating Reflexes: Gently tickle the baby’s lower lip in the center, moving up and down to trigger the rooting and tongue extrusion reflexes. Continue until the baby opens their mouth wide. Finger Insertion: When the baby opens wide, insert your finger, pad-up, against the hard palate near the upper gumline. The baby should use their tongue to create a seal around your finger. If the baby has difficulty, this skill will improve over time. Positioning Your Finger: As the baby begins sucking, move your finger to the junction of the hard and soft palate, where the breast nipple would be if breastfeeding. Maintain gentle contact with the hard palate to avoid gagging. Maintaining Position: Once your finger is correctly positioned, keep it still unless directed otherwise by a therapist. There’s usually no need to squeeze the bulb unless additional stimulation is needed. Let the baby set the pace to synchronize sucking, swallowing, and breathing. Ending the Feed: When the baby is satisfied, they may stop sucking or push your finger out with their tongue. A typical feed for babies older than a few days ranges from ¾ to 1½ oz., with older babies potentially needing more. Follow your baby’s cues. The Hazelbaker™ FingerFeeder holds 2 oz. and can be easily refilled during the feed if necessary.

Features
The Hazelbaker™ FingerFeeder is designed to encourage the baby to pace their feeding. Milk will only flow when the baby exerts the necessary effort, mimicking the sucking action needed at the breast. The device includes a feature that allows the caregiver to gently squeeze the milk container if the baby struggles to create enough suction. However, if squeezed too hard, the top will pop off, preventing excessive flow and protecting the baby’s airway. While switching to a slower flow bottle teat can address some feeding issues, the Hazelbaker™ FingerFeeder effectively prevents these problems by ensuring that the baby develops proper feeding techniques and avoids issues such as flow preference and nipple confusion. What is finger feeding?
Finger-Feeding Overview
Finger-feeding is an age-old technique used to provide nourishment to infants who have difficulty breastfeeding or need to be temporarily separated from their mother. This method offers the benefits of direct human touch and allows the baby to pace their feeding, mimicking the natural breastfeeding experience. Benefits: - Encourages Proper Tongue Placement: By positioning the caregiver’s finger correctly in the baby’s mouth, finger-feeding helps guide the tongue into the optimal position for breastfeeding or maintains its proper function, promoting effective suck-swallow-breathe coordination.
- Therapeutic Use: It is particularly useful after a frenotomy for tongue-tie or for infants with low intra-oral tone. Finger-feeding can strengthen the tongue and intra-oral muscles and address various sucking problems.
Controlled Flow Rate: - Prevents Overwhelming Flow: Many bottles have milk flow rates that are too fast for babies, leading to issues such as interrupted breathing, coughing, or choking. Finger-feeding helps manage the flow rate, reducing these risks and preventing the development of compensatory sucking patterns or nipple confusion.
- Avoids Flow Preference: Babies accustomed to the instant flow of bottles may become impatient or frustrated at the breast. Finger-feeding helps mitigate this by providing a controlled flow and gradually encouraging proper breastfeeding techniques.
