The Hazelbaker™ FingerFeeder promotes pacing during feeding, requiring the baby to work for the milk, which closely mimics the effort needed for effective breastfeeding. This feeder encourages the baby to exert the necessary sucking effort, and if additional assistance is needed, a gentle squeeze of the milk container can help. However, excessive squeezing will cause the top to pop off, protecting the baby’s airway from being overwhelmed by a too-fast flow rate.

Hazelbaker Finger Feeder Instructions & Assembly PDFFeeding Instructions for Optimal Comfort and Effectiveness Positioning: Place both yourself and the baby in a comfortable feeding position, similar to the one shown in the photo. Using a pillow to raise the baby to chest height can enhance comfort for both of you. Feeding Side: Babies often prefer orienting to the right, so holding the baby with the left hand and finger-feeding with the right may be beneficial. However, choose the side that feels most comfortable for you and your baby. Relaxation: Keep your shoulders and elbows relaxed to minimize muscle strain. Use additional pillows for support if needed. Stimulating Reflexes: Gently tickle the baby’s lower lip in the center, moving up and down to trigger the rooting and tongue extrusion reflexes. Continue until the baby opens their mouth wide. Finger Insertion: When the baby opens wide, insert your finger, pad-up, against the hard palate near the upper gumline. The baby should use their tongue to create a seal around your finger. If the baby has difficulty, this skill will improve over time. Positioning Your Finger: As the baby begins sucking, move your finger to the junction of the hard and soft palate, where the breast nipple would be if breastfeeding. Maintain gentle contact with the hard palate to avoid gagging. Maintaining Position: Once your finger is correctly positioned, keep it still unless directed otherwise by a therapist. There’s usually no need to squeeze the bulb unless additional stimulation is needed. Let the baby set the pace to synchronize sucking, swallowing, and breathing. Ending the Feed: When the baby is satisfied, they may stop sucking or push your finger out with their tongue. A typical feed for babies older than a few days ranges from ¾ to 1½ oz., with older babies potentially needing more. Follow your baby’s cues.
